The cold weather has really kicked in and it’s chilly out there! So how can you keep warm without breaking the bank this autumn? Here are our top 5 tips.
1) Keep your extremities warm. We lose heat rapidly through our heads- probably because there are so many blood vessels in the scalp- so it makes sense to wear a hat. If you’re saving on the heating why pop on a woolly hat indoors and invest in some USB gloves for winter typing (yes they exist!) At least one of our actors and one of our writers has confessed to owning a slanket (blanket with sleeves) to snuggle up in. Just don’t try walking in a slanket: faceplant.
2) Do the housework. Keeping active gets the blood pumping and keeps us warm so clean the house, burn up a few calories and get warm into the bargain. If housework isn’t your thing, wrap up warm and go for a brisk walk, have a snowball fight with a friend or put some music on and have a boogie.
3) Layer up. stick some tights, leggings or long johns under your jeans and try some light thermal layers. Heat tech from Uniqlo are great quality and affordable. Then layer up with a cosy jumper and scarf like our director Scott.
4) Eating produces the thermic effect of food (TEF) so have a snack and a warm drink when the temperature drops but stick to a warming cup of cocoa. Alcohol may make you feel warmer but actually lowers your temperature. Damn.
5) Save on heating and take a cosy journey on the tube (which is always warm- as anyone who travels on it during the summer months will know!) to Camden and then take shelter in a cosy little theatre called the Etcetera where a brilliant quartet of plays called Bookends is being shown from 18th November to 7th December. Guaranteed to keep the winter blues at bay.
